Air pollution is one of the biggest threats to human health. According to the WHO, ambient air pollution accounts for 4.2 million deaths globally every year.
Other estimates place the figure as high as 9 million. Exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is the fifth leading mortality risk factor in the world (Global Burden of Disease Study, 2015).

Ambient air pollution is highly dependent on our lifestyles and heavily linked to the use of motor vehicles, industrial emissions, household heating, and wood and coal burning, among other sources. Changes in the way we design, use and move around our cities could bring significant improvements in air quality.
Here is a list of simple things any person can do:
Walk, cycle or use any other
form of active transport

For longer trips, use public transport instead of cars
Switch to cleaner and renewable energy sources in your household
Demand change! We need a new urban model centred on people, not cars.
Ask your local representatives to take action against air pollution and support political options that include a clean air agenda.

Do you represent a local government? The ISGlobal Ranking of Cities project is still ongoing. In order to improve our results, we need more precise data on city-specific death and disease rates, air pollution levels and socioeconomic status. If you have local data or would like a tailored analysis, get in touch with us using this form.
