Healthy Urban Design Index
The Healthy Urban Design Index (HUDI) assesses the extent to which the way European cities are configured supports health. It examines 13 indicators from around 1,000 cities and establishes a score for each of them, as well as an overall score for each city.
The HUDI is designed as an awareness raising and planning tool for European Cities. Our goal was to analyse a large number of cities of different sizes and types to be as inclusive as possible. To accomplish this, we used all Open Source data that is publicly available. We understand that Open Source data has a number of important limitations in terms of its accuracy for any given city. Thus, HUDI presented here is a first step to stimulate discussion, reflection and interest from cities to refine the HUDI analysis with more precise data. We also hope that HUDI will generate interest in improving current Open Source data sets to be more accurate and available.
We have made the codes for HUDI open source so that cities can use their own, more precise to run their analysis, and repeat analysis over time to track progress. The data and codes used for HUDI are available for cities and other users on Zendoo and github.
